what's up dog?
yeah, my pastor was speakin on some good things this sunday. kairos is greek.
u know wit it being MLK holiday and everything, he was speakin on how he felt
king might feel about how his name has been commercialized. ex: his name on
t-shirts, people putting his name in their grants to get ends, or like those
two organizations in houston that were fightin about which one was havin the
"official" mlk parade. anyway, rev. was sayin how people don't realize that
mlk didn't set out to be a civil rights leader. he had just finished doin his
first sermon for his church in alabama when the bus boycotts got started. he
initially said that they could use his church to basically have a rally to
inform people about the plan. but, once he got up to speak to the crowd to
introduce the committee of women who actually came up wit the idea for the
boycott, everybody was gettin all fied up. that's when the women decided that
mlk would be a could person to help them rally people together for the
boycott. u know all of this started in '55. anyway the same thing basically
happened during the march on washington. it was a whole lot of people who was
supposed to give a speech that didn't. the rev. say people was basically
arguin about it behind the scenes. after a lot of boring speeches, and three
hours or so of standing in 92 degrees weather, the crowd started gettin
restless. they were waitin to here martin. they sent mahalia jackson up and
the crowd got crunk. u know all church goin black folks liked mahalia. mlk
came up after her. rev. says that martin was supposed to deliver a written
speech about how govt. needed to pass these certain civil rights bills, etc.
but then mahalia was in the back, basically pumpin him up to tell the crowd
about the dream. he had delivered speeches a couple of weeks before the march
in two other cities, talkin about a dream he had. he diverted from his
written speech one time and started sayin, "go back to mississippi, go back to
alabama", etc. so rev. says that were women on the front row like, "go head
son!" when one of the march organizers realized he had gone away from the
planned speech, they were basically whispering in the back, to stick to the
speech.
at the time the three major networks were there, and his speech was supposed
to be about 8 minutes to accommodate the networks programming. (this was the
only time in history that all three major networks covered a rally for black
people, live!) not even the million man march was covered live by all three
major networks.
it hadn't happened before or since.
well, mahalia was in the back tellin martin to "tell them about the dream".
so when he went away from the scripted speech again, he just started flowin.
so when he started sayin "freedom should ring from every mountain and
molehill", etc., it really got krunk. so he went wit it.
rev. says that the boycott and that "i have a dream" speech basically were the
two biggest events in mlk's life, but neither one was planned by martin. God
had that plan for him. both times he just got caught up, and it was on!
kairos--Our lives are directed according to a calendar we cannot read and
which we have no control.
